The Ordinary Octopug

From now until February 10 at noon CST, use the coupon "MYQUIRKYVALENTINE" to get 14% off any purchase at my Etsy store.

Like this little guy right here, the Ordinary Octopug. Humble, optimistic, basking near the surface of Lake Michigan, the common American Octopug is often confused with the Pugtopus, which we know is only found in saltwater. If you stop your boat in open water, sometimes you can hear them snorting as they casually embrace the bow.

New Prints - Kitten Fairies and Such

Ever since I was a kid, I've been fascinated with illustration. Like most people, my first experiences with books were books with pictures, and I still remember spending more time looking at Arthur Rackham's illustrations than reading about Alice herself.

My project for 2012 is "Postcards from Heck." It's a collection of nightmares, creepy crawlies, and fantastical creatures of diabolical cuteness. The centipedes and sea monsters have a certain charm, but the Kitten Fairies and other garden creatures have a... I don't know... perverse cuteness. And each is part of a larger story (allowing me to get back to writing and synthesize that with my work).

I hope you enjoy these, and please take a look at Postcards From Heck. I'd love to hear what you think. Prints are available, see the link at bottom to Etsy.

New Paintings on Wood

I just love the look of oil paint on wood. The grain shows through in places, and looks so warm and subtle.

"Postcards From Heck" is a series I'm working on of small paintings on wood, based on nightmares, creepy crawlies, and other things that simply thrill the fear centers. They'll be available soon as prints. One of the most common ways people describe my work is "creepy," so I thought, why not, let's do his thing. :-) I hope you enjoy them.

Two New Workshops - Alla Prima and Achieving Realism

I am offering two workshops in early 2012.  They'll be very goal-oriented with step-by-step demonstrations and coaching, so space will be limited to only five students. Given at my home studio in Aurora, IL.

BONUS - Take both workshops and save 30%.

ALLA PRIMA WORKSHOP
"Alla Prima" means starting and finishing a painting in one session.  Often the paintings are characterized by visible brushwork and a sense of bravura. I'll demonstrate my method for creating small, impactful paintings in a single session (4-6 hours.)  We will explore composition, lighting, drawing, and oil paint handling techniques that give excellent results. Examples of alla prima paintings are below.
Saturday and Sunday, January 14 and 15, 9am - 4pm. Lunch will be provided. $180 per person.

Or, save almost 30% by signing up for both workshops by clicking here ($250, a savings of $110) :

ACHIEVING REALISM WORKSHOP
There are many keys to creating a sense of "realism" in a painting, but the effects are profound. It takes a decisive and reliable technique to accomplish effects that make people say, "wow that looks like a photograph." I'll demonstrate my techniques for achieving realism in oils and walk you though the same process step-by-step. We will discuss composition, drawing, layering, mediums and surfaces, and oil-painting techniques that lend themselves best to producing realism.
Saturday and Sunday, February 18 and 19, 9am to 4pm. Lunch will be provided. $180 per person.

Or, save almost 30% by signing up for both workshops by clicking here ($250, a savings of $110) :

Painted Pendants Update

I've added three new pendants to the collection, this time focusing on eyes. With the realism and the natural skin tones, these make really striking necklaces - almost like it's part of you. It's thrillingly weird. :-) Click here to see them on Etsy.

I've almost got the commissions done too. If you want a personal portrait on a pendant - now's the time to email me for a commission. They do take a little time so any new commissions have to be started before Dec 15 to ship in time for Christmas. lisagloria@gmail.com

The Food Show

The show opens today at 33 W New York St, Aurora IL. I'm so excited - the works look beautiful together. Brian Busch is a wonderful talent and I think we covered all the "Food" bases, including paintings of food, about food, about taste, eating, and even a couple figure paintings of goddesses related to food production: Ceres (grain, childbirth) and Diana (the hunt).

The show runs until January, so please do stop by if you have a chance!

Painting on Silver - Rooster, Tilapia

I don't know if I can capture how luminous and striking a painting on silver is, but I hope you can imagine. Not to mention, of course, the cheeky attitude.
