Today is my birthday. As a friend said - another trip around the sun. Getting to be a lot of them, and while I don't plan on stopping any time soon, it's time to change course.
After a long time planning, I've decided to make the shift to full-time painting. I'll still be teaching of course, but producing far more small studies, as well as larger, gallery-ready works. I've begun learning video techniques and should have a demo to upload to YouTube soon, and thereafter, who knows!
So if you've been considering commissioning a portrait, or buying a study, or offering me a gallery show, now is a good time. :-)

For this portrait commission, I'm starting with the value study (12 x 18)to ensure the elements are balanced and all lead to the foacl point even though there is a lot going on. There are two curving diagonals, light and dark, and lots of repeating shapes. Most of the painting will be built around the middle values, with the book drawing your eye up to the face, and the hair as the darkest value. The bench legs in the corners make a nice stable triangle with the top of the head. To keep a quiet feeling, I'll build over a warm underpainting in the final version, working in translucent and opaque layers. So much fun! Baby flesh is touchy because you want to keep it soft and plump looking, glowing.
Of course he is deeply, deeply cute.
