This blog is moving

Yeah, I'm going to move this blog over to my main URL, www.lisagloria.com, where the blog portion will be www.lisagloria.com/blog

I've been super terrible awful about keeping my website updated, so I've just been blogging. Tsk tsk tsk! The site will have a cleaner design, updated works, new categories, a pretty spiffy gallery slideshow IMO, and mucho mas. It's not quite done, but mostly done. Done enough that I could tell you. Pretty soon I'll post pics of my cool new studio too.

If you subscribe via RSS, the feedburner address will redirect you. No worries.

Sorry I have been offline for a few days - I'm moving my studio into a new room here with North light. Wow, what a difference! Unfortunately, the Internet connection is way on the other side of the house currently. It'll all be together in a couple days tho. :-)
If you want to sign up for the one-day Alla Prima Online Workshop next Saturday, there's still time! Http://artstudiosecrets.com/workshops

Victor Envelope Portraits

Here, they are, my handsome gentlemen. Each painting is 18 x 24, oil on canvas, and this is the order they're intended to show in. The clients loved the paintings, and they're going to look wonderful in the board room.

Apples and Spoon - Workshop painting

8 x 6 inches, oil on panel. This is the demonstration painting from the virtual workshop i held last weekend here in my studio streaming live to studios all over the world. That was awesome. Other people's final paintings are here. They're not all in yet but they look GOOD!

Of course it's for sale. Email me.

Cindy and I are putting together more workshops over the next few months including portraits, alla prima technique, still life, and floral. I'll post a link when the registration pages are up.

Lipking Workshop Photos

THIS BLOG HAS MOVED. CLICK HERE PLEASE.

Finally! I have uploaded the photos and documented the process of Jeremy Lipking's figure painting demonstration in brief, from my notes. But, to not be a jerk, I don't want to post them all over the internet OK? So if you want to see them, please proceed in an orderly fashion over to http://artstudiosecrets.com/2009/04/02/lipking-workshop-pics/

Lipking Workshop

I will show Jeremy's work too - I took lots of in progress pieces and notes. But for now this one is mine. 12 x 9 on panel.
So, in my hubris, I really thought we had a lot in common. We have the same influences, similar taste, similar age, and similar finish (sometimes). I thought that I'd go there and Jeremy would have the missing pieces of my puzzles which would fit neatly into the voids I'd already identified. And Poof! All fixed.
Yeah..... so that's definitely not what happened. As it turns out, we are complete opposites in every way I could think of. First, he's really tall - like 6'3" or something. I am dinky. He's really quiet - I had to staple my lips together. He doesn't draw out the figure except to measure head distances horizontally and vertically, then a midline. He uses titanium white. His flesh mixtures were ultra blue + burnt sienna + white on day one, and cad orange + viridian + white on day 2. He uses sable badgers. He is unconcerned with the likeness. He uses an open palette.
Wow! So basically every thing I thought I had settled, he unsettled for me. But, being determined to wring every penny from my entrance fee, I gave it all a shot. Um - I did have to wipe out the composition 6 times on the first day, but after a while it worked. And at the end, not having my usual outside-in drawing tripped me up a little, but I fixed it. Wow! Talk about your out-of-comfort-zone experiences.
This has very much invigorated me, and I hope to go back next year. Our differences really shone a light on some glaring inadequacies and opportunities in my work. It was a very exciting 3 days. Also, he is a nice man, in fact his whole family is kind and friendly - I'd recommend this experience to anyone.

Morning Glory #4 in progress

As promised, here is the side by side comparison of day 2 vs day 3 on morning glory #4. Sarah (during the webcast) said it looked done before i started, but no... i think side by side you can see there was a lot of work to do today. And still more to go. The leaf/vines and vase are not completed, just edged.

I probably wont broadcast the ending, it's catch as catch can around here as I try to finish a few simultaneous projects....

LIVE PAINTING SESSION WEDNESDAY

I'll paint the end of the morning glory tomorrow, 9:30 am CST, GMT -6. Probably only get to share about half, because 3rd day sessions are a lot about tickling the panel til it's right, and that might take a while. Sounds fun yes?

Spring flowers

5 x 7, oil on panel. This painting is available for sale. Please email me at lisagloria@gmail.com to inquire.

If anyone know what kind of flower these are, could you post it in a comment or email me? They are about 4-5 inches tall. That large leaf behind the front one is part of the plant, or I'd think it was a crocus. EDIT: It's a bloodroot - thanks Dave B! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloodroot

So, Lipking's workshop is coming up, and the materials list says titanium white. I haven't used titanium white in years and years... So I thought I'd give it a try. Loved it! I always think of it as opaque and indelicate, but I must have been using it wrong. It's very sensitive.

Bouquet #2 - Final

11 x 14, o/c, finished today in front of a live studio audience until the server gave up the ghost.

That was fun! I hope everyone enjoyed hanging out. It's nice to have company in the studio.

I won't have a live studio session tomorrow - I'm working on a couple news ones and making videos of the process. See you all next week!

I'll be painting from life this morning, 9:30am CST. I can't work on the bouquet today because it's not dry yet, so I'll work on something different.

Heather #9

11 x 14, oil on canvas. Looks like my camera is dying - can't seem to get a decent picture of it. Which is too bad, because the flesh tones in this are pretty good, I have to tell you.
Please email me at lisagloria@gmail.com if you are interested in purchasing it. Thanks!

Bouquet in prgress - day 2

Here is the progress of the bouquet commission, after day 2. Last night's session was streamed live on the web, and I've promised not to tinker with it unless the cameras are rolling. That's tough! It's a pretty complicated piece to be working on in front of everybody, but I'm feeling good about it so far.

Looks like about 2 more sessions left to go. I'll let you know when another is coming - probably Wed morning unless the background is tacky.

Carnations #3 - Final painting

12 x 12, oil on panel. I'll try to get a better pic tomorrow.

I saved step by step pics of this painting, so I will post that on ArtStudioSecrets as a step by step demonstration soon, and also the glazing section of this was already done as a demo on how to glaze, available here. I hear that page looks really weird in Safari - we're working on it but I am XML impaired.

I changed a bunch of things on the final day, going to a cooler background and warmer foreground, and shifting the focus toward the vase. This seemed like a natural plan since the vase is a little more interesting than humble carnations, and I'm pleased with that change.

What do you think?

LIVE PAINTING MONDAY

Hi I'll be working on the bouquet commission on Monday, streaming live from http://www.tinyurl.com/lisagloria starting at 3 pm CST. This is a later time so my international friends can tune in without sleep deprivation.

This will be the first color underlayer. Those who have asked about how to paint glass might find it a useful demonstration.

Art Crash

Peter Plagens writes an outstanding article in today's Newsweek about how the contemporary art market has been as bloated as every other industry and warped to art's detriment. We're optimistic that the crash will turn people back to quality!! http://www.newsweek.com/id/185786
